Last Updated: October 1, 2026
This report tracks how usage is divided across the leading AI platforms each month. We define a “generative AI chatbot” as any LLM-powered web or mobile application used by the public to get answers or produce content. All figures are estimates of monthly active users across U.S. web and mobile platforms, expressed as a share of the category total.

ChatGPT improved its majority share in the US market in September, rising 0.6 points in conjunction with the release of GPT-6 Astra and ChatGPT Images 2.5. Claude also added 0.4 points on the back of three model launches. Gemini gave back 0.7 points after its July jump.
Many users now keep two or three chatbots in rotation instead of switching outright, limiting how far any single platform can climb or fall. Projections indicate that ChatGPT is likely to hold in the low 50s through the remainder of 2026, with Gemini and Claude splitting most of the remaining growth.
What Moved the Market in September 2026
September was the busiest release month of the year, with every top-five platform shipping a new model or app. Claude alone launched three models, and OpenAI introduced its GPT-6 generation.

Some of these releases arrived late in the month so their effect on usage should begin to appear in next month’s figures. Claude Sonnet 5.5 and GPT-6 Sol in particular arrived too late to significantly impact September.
The Fastest Growing Generative AI Chatbots
Claude overtook Gemini as the fastest-growing chatbot in the third quarter, with an estimated 15% more U.S. users than in Q2. The ranking below compares each platform’s estimated users for July–September against April–June. Launch-driven spikes tend to cool within a quarter, so a high rank here signals momentum rather than a lasting shift.

Fastest Growing Generative AI Chatbots – October 2026
| Rank | Generative AI Chatbot | Estimated Quarterly User Growth |
| 1 | Claude AI¹ | +15% ▲ |
| 2 | Google Gemini² | +11% ▲ |
| 3 | ChatGPT | +5% ▲ |
| 4 | DeepSeek³ | +5% ▲ |
| 5 | Grok | +3% ▲ |
| 6 | Microsoft Copilot | +3% ▲ |
| 7 | Perplexity | +1% ▲ |
| 8 | Meta AI⁴ | Verified numbers not available |
¹Claude’s quarter was powered by a steady run of releases: access to Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 resumed on July 1, Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1 followed on September 1, and Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 shipped in the last ten days of September.
²Gemini is still growing, but more slowly than last quarter’s +17% as the market adjusts to updated pricing and its Android and Gmail integrations become saturated.
³DeepSeek’s V4.1-Flash release kept developer interest high, though its U.S. user base remains small compared with the leaders.
⁴Meta AI’s reach cannot be isolated as a standalone chatbot because its totals blend social interactions across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp with deliberate chatbot sessions.
ChatGPT Market Share: 2026 Trend
ChatGPT began 2026 with two-thirds of the generative AI chatbot market and lost ground in six of the next seven months, including a 7.3-point drop in July. September’s 52.1% is its strongest month-over-month gain of the year.
NOTE: ChatGPT’s market share also counts Bing Copilot, since both run on the same underlying OpenAI models. Copilot differs mainly in personalizing responses with data from a user’s Microsoft account.

| September 2026 | 26.9% |

Perplexity Market Share: 2026 Trend
Perplexity slipped to 1.9% in September, down from 5.3% in January. Its consumer share keeps eroding as general-purpose assistants build answer-engine and live-search features into their own apps.
Perplexity’s strategy is shifting toward agents and the workplace rather than chasing consumer search volume. In September it brought its Portable Computer agent to Windows PCs and extended Computer into email threads and Microsoft 365 apps. Its revenue and enterprise base continue to grow even as its share of chatbot users declines.
| Month | Perplexity Market Share |
| January 2026 | 5.3% |
| February 2026 | 4.0% |
| March 2026 | 3.4% |
| April 2026 | 2.8% |
| May 2026 | 2.7% |
| June 2026 | 2.6% |
| July 2026 | 2.0% |
| August 2026 | 2.0% |
| September 2026 | 1.9% |

Claude AI Market Share: 2026 Trend
Claude climbed back to 10.6% in September after two months of slight declines, its second-highest reading of 2026 behind June’s 11.5%. September gains came on the back of three releases: Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1 on September 1, followed by Claude Opus 5.5 on September 22.
Claude Sonnet 5.5 landed on September 28 with only two days left in the month so October’s figures should show more of its effect.
